A bit of story

The seven deadly sins appear for the first time already in the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle. In this famous work he defined them as "bad habits". According to the philospher the capital vices derive from the repetition of actions that, iterated, form in a person a "habit"or, as claims the scientist of ancient Greece as well, even a "second nature" that inclines an individual in a certain direction.

However, when it comes to the specific list of sins, we must not forget about the crucial contribution of Aristotle's successors.

The system of seven deadly sins was created by friars of monasteries who shed light on the mystery of human's heart. This system was "invented" in the 4-th century by a Christian monk and ascetic named Evagrius Ponticus and afterwards it was elaborated  by a theologian and hermit - John Cassian (they both are particularly known as two of the Desert Fathers).

Eventually it was the pope Gregory the Great to ameliorate and spread the system of seven capital vices all over the world.

The seven deadly sins nowadays

Regarding the question from my previous post, you probably still wonder why I am writing about the seven deadly sins, considerating that for ages in the european culture field the origins and the categories of moral evil have been under detailed examination.

Because our time declassified them from the category of sin.

That is why we tend to say about a gluttonous person that he/she "has a good relationship with food";
about a lustful man that he "has a soft spot for women";
about a superb one that he/she "is proud and has a good self-awareness";
about a wrathful that he/she "has a character";
about a lazy person that he/she "does not let himself/herself be overwhelmed by the stressful pace of modern live";
about a jealous person that he/she "is just competitive, inclined to emulate";
and finally about a stingy one that he/she "is cautious and parsimonious".

Since time immemorial the experience of sin marks the existence of human beings. Thus, over time, we constantly disregard these trangressions and we do not even realize how serious the situation is.

The destination of the present blog

You probably wonder what's it all for? What's the point of creating a blog that would describe some religious topics, or maybe some delicate issues related to our spiritual sensitivity? The answer is clear: we abandoned our glorious "inheritance in Christ".

That is the reason why I would like to consider an argument highly appreciated in the Middle Ages, however nearly forgotten nowadays, that is the seven deadly sins or the so-called "Seven Nations", as the Church Fathers used to call them. In brief, we tend to disregard them, therefore the "Seven Sisters" are taking root in our hearts more and more day by day.

In a few days I shall characterise the above mentioned seven vices so that you could realize that they are constantly occupying your hearts, with a greater or lesser pressure.

That's all for now, I wish you a pleasant weekend, "stay tuned"! ;)
